Como Ground-Breaking Moment

New Como campus starts to become a reality; Goal is to serve more boys…

The saying “good things come to those who wait,” is one that inspires us all to be patient and to trust in God’s timing for everything. Beginning in 2008, the HOPE Farm Board of Directors began talking about opening a second location. In 2007, the first HOPE Farm boy from the Southside graduated from high school and went to college. Serving boys since 1997 and knowing the impact that was being made, creating a second location that would allow HOPE Farm to serve more boys made sense. In January 2010, after a lot of work, HOPE Farm opened a second campus in Como with five boys in a small renovated “crack” house at 5636 Fletcher Avenue. Over the last seven years, the number of boys increased (as of this report, Como serves 16 boys daily), but the little house began to feel smaller and smaller. It was obvious that we would need to expand and attempt, at least, to acquire more land and build a facility that resembled the space on the Southside off Morningside.

Como Ground-Breaking Moment Patience is what was needed as land was acquired, meetings were had, and requirements were met. Finally, on Friday March 31st at 10 a.m., we had a very emotional ground breaking ceremony on a property that will be the new Como location. The staff, the board, donors, City Council representatives, ministers, and even a few of the HOPE Farm boys took part in a beautiful ceremony full of celebration, prayers, and hope.

Director of Programs Michael Morris thanked everyone for their part in making that day possible and was clear about the desire to partner with the Como Community to make a positive difference in our city:

From our hearts, our deepest gratitude goes out to each and every one of you for what you have done to make this day possible. As I thought about today, I wondered, ‘Lord how can I show these people so that they really feel and really understand that whatever part they played, that it was vital – not just vital to being able to build a building, but vital in building lives.

This past year, HOPE Farm Como had its first young man to graduate from high school since we have been in the community. He is now a student at Langston University in Oklahoma. I keep in touch with him and right now he has a 3.7 GPA! Some of us here are in the trenches working daily with these boys, but we didn’t do it by ourselves. We did it because of YOU!

The gratitude from the staff of HOPE Farm for everyone that made the Ground Breaking day possible is enormous. We are so excited for construction to begin!
